The Tonga Red Cross Society was founded in August 1961. Its constitution is based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949 and their Additional Protocols of 1977, to which the Tongan Government is a party. Tonga Red Cross Society is a dynamic humanitarian organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of the most vulnerable through mobilizing the power of humanity and the spirit of volunteerism. We are guided in our work by the principles of the international humanitarian law and shall respect the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, namely:
Humanity (‘Ofa’i mo Tokoni’i ‘o Ha’a Tangata)
Impartiality (‘Ikai Filifilimanako)
Neutrality (‘Ikai kau ki ha faha’i)
Independence (Tau’ataina)
Voluntary (Ngaue Tokoni ‘Ofa)
Unity (‘E taha pe e Sosaieti)
Universality (Fekau’aki Fakavaha’apule’anga)
Tonga Red Cross was officially recognised by the Tonga Government on 31 October 1972, following the passing of the Tonga Red Cross Act 1972. Our National Society, which was recognised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) in 1981, is part of the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Our leadership and management comprises a governing board elected by our members, and staff managed by a Secretary General. Through our headquarters in Tongatapu and network of volunteers, we provide services throughout the kingdom and also have officers from the branches at Vava’u, Ha’apai & ‘Eua district.
